Your scenic trail is well groomed and winds its way through Johnston Canyon towards seven sets of waterfalls. The lower falls are an easy 1.1K walk, the second set of falls are 2.7K. Views of the Canyon and Johnston Creek are beautiful. Interesting steel catwalks with railings have been constructed and attached to the canyon walls with well placed lookouts for observing and wonderful photo opportunities. You will find yourself adventuring in limestone caves and walking on narrower plank like catwalks crossing Johnston Canyon Creek.
To prepare for your adventure we provide a restaurant, ice cream stand and gift shop at the base of the trail. Stock up with water and snacks!
Great photo memory opportunities abound at the lower falls as you experience the natural fresh scents and sounds of nature and running water. Owls along with ground squirrels, dippers and other birds have been spotted along the trail so be prepared.
The upper falls covers more elevation and if you can imagine was the sight for a Guiness book of records as a kayaker careened over the falls to claim a new world record some years ago. Your trip returns the same way and offers unique views as you follow the creek back and with several scenic viewpoints, like this small set of cascading waterfalls.
The Ink Pots consist of several pools made up of emerald coloured mineral springs that bubble to the surface. If you have time, carry on to the Ink Pots for a more serene and personal trek. Continuing from the upper falls the trail is a moderate climb out of the canyon for 3 km’s through the forest. It opens up to a meadow where the Ink Pots were created. The hike from the upper falls to the Ink Pots takes approximately one hour..
Springtime and Fall is generally quieter than the summer months. Due to the amount of shade and cooler temperatures in the canyon the trails can reflect the condition of the trail. It’s a good idea to inquire with one of the tourist offices in either Banff or Lake Louise for current trail conditions.
Johnston Canyon trail is open all year round. The main lodge is open from May 16 until Oct 25
