Walter, Marguerite and son Ben Camp 1933 - near the present site of Johnston Canyon cabins

In 1910, Johnston Canyon was named after a prospector who discovered gold in the creek.

Johnston Canyon cabins is rich with history. Named after a gold prospector, it has been a popular Banff attraction for over 100 years.

It was Walter and Marguerite Camp in 1927 who helped transform the area into a world class attraction. After travelling the world and finding Johnston Canyon, Walter Camp was mesmerized by the 7 waterfalls, inkpots and majestic mountain setting. Walter and Marguerite decided to settle there, transforming a current building on the site into a log teahouse. They also took charge of the task of building a trail through the Canyon, funded by Banff National Parks.

Today Johnston Canyon is visited by thousands of people all over the world to walk the trail and stay at the Resort which is still owned by the Camp family. The Resort has expanded over the year to 42 cabins – all maintaining the charm of their original 1900’s design yet upgraded to offer guests all of the modern luxuries of a fine Banff cabin accommodation.

  • We were delighted with the cabin for comfort and its furnishings. We met the cleaning staff and they were extremely courteous and friendly. We found the place rather large so we would have liked to have had a map.

  • Our Cabin was adorable and perfect and we hope they never change it. The walk next to the resort was fabulous. The walk can get pretty busy during the day because it is such a lovely walk.
